    Small Sizes, Big Numbers

Some nutritional horror figures don’t exactly come as a surprise.  No one is particularly shocked when told that an order of Burger King’s large fries packs in 580 calories, or that a large Wendy’s chocolate frosty shake clocks in at 890 calories and contains almost as much added sugar as three cans of Coke.

It’s not just the large sizes that come with jaw-dropping nutritional values.  In fast food world, “just go with a small” advice goes out the (drive-thru) window. Below, my three picks for “yes, really, those numbers are for the SMALL size!”

Why Calories Must Be Posted Nationwide!

MenuCaloriesIt is my hope that in the not-too-distant future, chain restaurants will be legally required to post calorie information about their products in all fifty states.

Some know-it-alls like to quip, “Oh, come on, who doesn’t know a triple cheeseburger with large fries is high in calories?”

What these geniuses fail to understand is that it is not the obvious pitfalls that are a concern.  Consider the following calorie values.  They were certainly surprising to me!

    • Au Bon Pain chocolate orange pecan scone: 580 calories
    • Au Bon Pain crumb cake: 750 calories
    • Au Bon Pain pecan roll: 810 calories
    • Cosi western omelette croissant: 713 calories
    • Cosi garden pesto omelette croissant: 740 calories
    • Cosi carrot muffin: 500 calories
    • Cosi cinnamon-apple pie: 964 calories
    • Uno Chicago Grill chicken & broccoli fettuccine: 1,300 calories
    • Uno Chicago grill individual tomato & cheese pizza: 1,740 calories
    • Uno Chicago grill individual veggie pizza: 1,950 calories

How many were you surprised by?

These three chains also offer items with much more reasonable caloric values.  Unfortunately, if that information continues to remain hidden from menus, consumers will continue to be in the dark.

    Numbers Game: Answer

A pepperoni pizza off the Uno Chicago Grill’s kids’ menu contains 800 calories, 2,060 milligrams of sodium, and 18 grams of saturated fat.

(NOTE: The “12 and under” population this menu is intended for should consume no more than 2,000 milligrams of sodium and 17 grams of saturated fat a day.)

Keep in mind that a sedentary 8 year old boy should not be getting more than 1,400 calories a day.

A sedentary 11 year old, meanwhile, should not surpass the 2,000 calorie mark.

And those sodium and saturated fat numbers are staggering — even for adults!

PS: If a kids’ menu sundae is in the cards for dessert, that’s an additional 840 calories and 18 grams of saturated fat.

    Numbers Game: Answer

An individual (advertised for one person) four cheese pizza from Uno Chicago Grill (formerly known as Pizzeria Uno) provides 1,920 calories, 39 grams of saturated fat, and 2,760 milligrams of sodium

(NOTE: Saturated fat consumption should not exceed 20 grams per day, and the maximum daily sodium limit is set at 2,400 milligrams)

Maybe they should change their slogan to, “Why eat three meals when you can get a day’s worth of calories in one sitting?”

And don’t think “just having an appetizer” is the solution.

The pizza skins appetizer packs in 2,400 calories, 50 grams of saturated fat, and 3,600 milligrams of sodium.

Even if split with someone else it’s an absolute belt-buster.

Uno Grill does earn some brownie points for offering more sensible items, including a grilled mahi mahi with mango salsa entree that adds up to 220 calories and 400 milligrams of sodium.

Team it up with roasted or steamed veggies — or brown rice cranberry pilaf — for a fast-food meal your heart will be thankful for.

Whatever you do, watch out for the skinless baked potato side dish!

The cheddar, bacon, and sour cream piled on top turn a nutrition champ into a 480-calorie monster that delivers half a day’s worth of saturated fat and sodium.
