    You Ask, I Answer: Omega 6 in Nuts & Seeds

    Pile of assorted nuts close upI know you are a huge proponent of everyone decreasing their omega-6 intake.  You usually point to soybean oil, corn oil, and cottonseed oil as ingredients to try to eat less of.

    What about nuts, though?  Aren’t some of them very high in omega 6?

    Some nuts and seeds (i.e.: almonds, sesame seeds, pecans, and cashews) contain more omega-6 fatty acids than they do omega-3 fatty acids (to read why I recommend everyone decrease their omega-6 intake, please read this post).

    I am not quite as concerned about them, though, because they also contribute many healthful components to the diet (i.e.: fiber, phytonutrients, minerals, antioxidants, and monounsaturated fatty acids in the case of almonds and pecans).

    Plant oils high in omega-6 don’t have any “redeeming qualities”.  Although fast food chains and many food companies like to point to their use of “healthful plant oils”, the use of corn, soybean, and cottonseed oil has nothing to do with health, and everything to do with money.  Since these three crops are heavily subsidized, their byproducts (i.e.: oil) are cheap as dirt.
