    You Might As Well Call Them “Crop Subsidy Tarts”

    Pumpkin-Pie-Pop-TartsAutumn means two things — a dearth of “best & worst beach bodies” tabloid covers and the arrival of pumpkin-flavored items in stores.  Kellogg’s Pop-Tarts are not exempt from the latter, hence the latest addition to their product lineup — limited edition Frosted Pumpkin Pie pastries.

    Alas, the ingredient list reveals very little in the way of fall flavors and lots of the usual processed suspects.  Take a look at the entire ingredient list before we break it down:

    Enriched flour (wheat flour, niacin, reduced iron, thiamin mononitrate [vitamin b1], riboflavin [vitamin b2], folic acid)corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, soybean and palm oil (with tbhq for freshness), dextrose, sugar, cracker meal, contains two percent or less of wheat starch, nonfat milk, salt, pumpkin, maltodextrin, cornstarch, corn cereal, leavening (sodium acid pyrophosphate, baking soda, monocalcium phosphate), molasses, yellow corn flour, eggs, gelatin, cinnamon, vanilla extract, modified corn starch, nutmeg, ginger, caramel color, sunflower lecithin, tricalcium phosphate, soy lecithin, cloves, vitamin a palmitate, niacinamide, reduced iron, yellow #6, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin b6), riboflavin (vitamin b2), yellow #5, thiamin hydrochloride (vitamin b1), red #40, folic acid, blue #1.

    The mot prominent ingredients:

    • White flour (crop subsidy)
    • Corn-based sweeteners (crop subsidy)
    • Two less-than-stellar oils (one of which is a crop subsidy)
    • Corn-based thickener (crop subsidy)
    • Sugar
    • Cracker meal (crop subsidy)

    Take note, too, that the majority of the filling consists of added corn-based sweeteners.  In fact, pumpkin is relegated to the “two percent or less” category along with artificial colors.

    Not surprisingly, one of these toaster pastries packs in four teaspoons of sugar and a measly gram of fiber.
